WANDERLEY CARDOSO early years

Wanderley Cardoso had a melodic tenor and knew how to use its power on sundry songs recorded by Copacabana Discos from 1965 through 1975. Ten years is nearly an eternity in show business.

We're more interested in Wanderley's second chart action stretch given that he had actually started in 1959, with a cover of  'Canção do jornaleiro' written by Heitor dos Prazeres, arranged by Mario Zan as a baião and recorded by 13-year-old Jonas Tinoco on 13 July 1932. It had a plaintive melody that told the sad story of a homeless boy who hawked newspapers tirelessly on the streets. The song went to #1 in 1933, and did fairly well in 1959 too, but it failed to produce a follow up and Wanderley had to wait another 5 years to enter the recording business again.

When Cardoso was in his mid teens he joined a male group called Os Paulistas, managed by Theotonio Pavão, a popular musician who had a music training centre at Aclimação-Cambuci and used most of his pupils as performers on a Saturday show on TV Tupi.
